Have you ever made a car purchase that was wildly different from any of your previous cars?

What was your motivation?

I went from one of these :

Kinja'd!!!

A 2001 Ford Laser. 97 hp, FWD, manual, rebadged 323, which i dutifully drove every day for 8 years, from the end of high school through to university. It was boring, it had no power. It was no fun. It got from A to B cheaply and that was probably the only good thing about it.

Then, I purchased one of these :

Kinja'd!!!

A 2009, VE Commodore SS-V. A 360 hp, V8, manual, embodiment of Australian 'fuck yeah' tire smoking fun.

My reasoning? Well first, I had a job and I could actually afford something like that. Second, I was envious of my father's cars that he had at the same age (Torana SLR 5000, Holden Monaro) and I wanted something that I could tell my kids I gladly polluted the environment with when I was younger. Third life is short, and I don't want to spend it driving boring cars.

What is your story?

How has the Commodore holding up for you so far? It still looks great, BTW.

That's actually not mine.

Sold it after a 2 years. Got a 2011 model.

Sold that after a year, got a 2012 model.

Sold that after a year got a VF 2013 model.

Kinja'd!!!

Think I might hold on to to this until the last of the 2017's come out. Get one of them and keep it as a part of history.

With one exception all the cars I've bought between 2012 and now were wildly different:

1997 Subaru Legacy wagon (AWD). Bought for €500, for a winter beater rally through the Austrian Alps.

Kinja'd!!!

2000 Peugeot 406 coupe with LPG conversion. My daily driver.

Kinja'd!!!

1989 BMW E30 325i Touring (wagon). Automatic, RWD. Bought as a pilot project for setting up a little export business. It's exported to the US (Texas) now.

Kinja'd!!!

1989 BMW E30 320i Touring (wagon). Manual, RWD. See previous BMW. Still in my possession as its still two months from its 25th birthday.

Kinja'd!!!

1988 Peugeot 205 GTI. Weekend toy. Potential export candidate.

1995 Ford Mustang Cobra Coupe

1986 Volvo 240 sedan

1989 Volvo 740 Wagon

I owned seven (7) small, 4 cylinder, Asian-built compact cars in a row, then I went out and bought a 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis.

Kinja'd!!!

Owned her twice as long as any previous vehicle and never want to sell her.
